- Places To Stay
Chole Island, Mafia Archipelago - Chole Mjini offers accommodation in unique treehouses, set in attractive tropical gardens with ancient Persian ruins overlooking Chole's beach. Each treehouse is designed individually and built using local materials and craftsmanship. Some are built around baobab trees, others set in the mangroves or on the beach. Each treehouse has a private garden with dry-composting toilet and hot water shower at ground level. Meals are served in a charming open-sided building, also housing a lounge area and upstairs bar with sweeping views across Chole Bay. The accent is on traditional local dishes of fresh seafood, fruit & vegetables, but also more international recipes adapted to local ingredients and zesty spices.
Chole Island, Mafia Archipelago
A short 30 minute flight from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island followed by a 45-minute drive to Utende Beach, and a 15-minute boat ride across Chole Bay to Chole Mjini.

Village tours, self-guided trails around Chole Island, daily excursions around the Mafia Archipelago and scuba-diving in the Marine Park.
The lodge buys its food from local fishermen and cooperative organic farms and is an important local employer providing jobs & in-house training for locals, whose income generation is restricted by Mafia Island's Marine Park policies. Chole Mjini was set up with minimal negative impact on the environment and developed very close relationships with Chole's local community donating US$10 per tourist night towards different community projects with full autonomy.
Cash, credit card payments and travellers cheques are accepted. A 6% fee is charged for all credit card payments, and 10% for all payments with travellers cheques.
There is no electricity but battery recharing facilities are available at the main lodge.
The lodge is closed from 16 Mar - 15 Jun.
