Botswana - Places To Stay

Botswana is famous for its wildlife and diverse scenery and landscapes. Areas like the Chobe National Park, Moremi National Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve have a very high concentration of game. The waterways of the Okavango Delta can be explored by boat and is a very popular destination for bird watchers. Further south, the bulk of the Kalahari desert falls within Botswana's borders and is home to most of the world's San (bushman) population. The vast Makgadikgadi salt pans attract thousands of flamingo and migrating zebra each year during the wet season.

The number of visitors allowed in Botswana's parks is limited and the parks are therefore never over-crowded. Lodges are often located in remote and private concession areas within the parks and offer a very exclusive game viewing experience.

Moremi
Located within the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is mostly described as one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa. It combines floodplains, waterways and lagoons with mopane woodland and acacia forests. It is the great diversity of plant and animal life that makes Moremi so well known.

The park offers a few small public campsites, but most luxury lodges are located in private concession areas that can often only be reached by charter plane or by boat. They offer a very exclusive and intimate experience with accommodation consisting of luxury safari style tents on raised platforms. Below you will find a selection of our preferred small lodges and camps carefully selected with our responsible travel philosophy in mind.

Moremi
Xakanaxa Area - The Camp is located alongside the Maunachira River, as it flows into the Xakanaxa Lagoon, in the famous and beautiful Moremi Game Reserve. At Camp Okuti guests are accommodated in spacious dome shaped chalets with private bathrooms. Days can be spent going out in open safari vehicles exploring the diverse range of habitats within the reserve - from open floodplains to belts of mopane woodland. Guests can also venture out onto the open waters of the Okavango by motorboat, visiting the Xakanaxa Lagoon and beyond up to the seasonal heronry at Gadikwe.

Moremi Game Reserve offers some of the most spectacular game viewing in Botswana and guests may encounter breeding herds of elephant, a hunting lioness or a sleeping pride of lion, grazing impalas and kudus and much more. A typical day in camp offers a morning and afternoon activity, returning to camp for lunch and a siesta in the middle of the day and back again in the evening for dinner and relaxing around the campfire.
Moremi
Xakanaxa and Khwai areas - There is something magical about the atmosphere created by the soft, warm glow of a lantern and showering under a starry night sky with a steaming bucket full of water warmed by the campfire. Although going back to basics is part of the experience on our mobile camping safaris, the tented accommodation is very comfortable, spacious & luxurious and the camps are set up at selected campsites throughout your safari.

There are no fixed buildings or facilities at the campsites used and the entire camp is erected and removed by the supply team. All water, wood etc. is driven in and waste taken out. A supply team moves with the group to set up and break down camp as required, and take care of general camp duties like cooking and washing up.

The main building consists of a raised lounge/dining room overlooking the delta, and a plunge pool in which to cool off. Within the camp is the Shinde Enclave, a perfect choice for a family or small group. The Enclave is a camp within a camp, and offers guests their own private tree house, dining facilities and an exclusive host/guide.
Moremi
Xakanaxa Area - Xakanaxa Camp is situated on the banks of the Khwai River. The stylish main buildings are set on raised platforms to maximize the views over the surrounding lagoons and islands. All buildings are constructed out of local timber, reed and thatch. The stylish, Meru style tents on raised platforms have en-suite bathrooms and a unique water sprinkler system that aids cooling during the midday heat.

The reception lounge boasts a curio shop and facilities for charging videos, cameras and batteries. The camp operates on generator power but at night all lighting is supplied by battery powered lamps, candles and paraffin lanterns, giving the camp an authentic African ambience. The kitchen is renowned for its traditional meals and dinner is accompanied by excellent South African wines. Meals are generally taken around the main dining room table, or private dining can be arranged on request.

Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is the world's largest inland delta. The meandering Okavango River empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert, creating thousands of waterways and islands, which can be explored either by boat, mokoro or on foot. Much of the area is divided into large concessions run by various safari groups. Development is strictly regulated so that there is little development and plenty of wildlife.

Most lodges are located on small islands and can only be reached by charter plane or by boat. They offer a very exclusive and intimate experience with accommodation consisting of luxury safari style tents on raised platforms overlooking the lagoons and waterways. Depending on the location, a combination of land and water based activities are available ranging from game drives and walking safaris to boat and mokoro excursions.
