Botswana - Places To Stay

Stanleys Camp
Southern Okavango Delta - Stanley's Camp, situated on a concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, offers some of the best game viewing in the Okavango Delta. The area is home to a wide variety of big game including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. The delicately appointed classic safari tents have handcrafted beds dressed with the finest linen, antique furniture individually selected and oriental carpets that transport you to early 19th century Africa. Each unit offers en-suite facilities and a private deck verandah with hammock. The main building is raised on decking and offers expansive views over the surrounding floodplains. Stanley's is carefully blended into the existing tree line, its main support being a large sausage tree. The highlight of a visit at Stanley's is the unique and educational experience with a group of semi- habituated African elephants. Guests can spend a morning walking with the elephants to observe and interact with them in their natural environment.

Location
Situated on a 260,000 acre private concession on the southern tip of Chief's Island, bordering the southern section of the Moremi Game Reserve. This private concession is located by definition in seasonal delta. The floodwaters arrive around June, although there is often navigable water all year round due to the presence of the Boro River.

Travel Information
The camp has its own registered private airstrip, which is located approximately 20 minutes from the camp. The camp is accessible by air from Maun (+-15 minutes), Kasane (+-1 hour 30 minutes) and all other delta camps. Please note the luggage restriction is 20kgs per person in a soft-sided bag.

Responsible Travel
Stanley's and Baines Camps are situated in a private community administered concession. Sanctuary Lodges & Camps has entered into a joint venture partnership with the community designed to expose individuals to and nuture skills and interests in the world of tourism with a view of social and economic upliftment. Most staff members originate from the surrouding villages and have been trained in the camp's in-house training program.

Wherever possible Stanley's Camp has made use of local resources and locally produced crafts, such as hand made pottery and baskets.

Stanley's Camp supports community projects in the area through the Friends of Conservation Trust. Projects currently being supported include the Living with Elephants Outreach Program. The foundation specializes in educating people about the potential for a peaceful co-existence between man and these icons of African Conservation. Hundreds of children from local schools are brought into the bush to interact with and learn about elephants, overcoming their fear of these animals.

General environmental practices:
Biodegradable detergents are used in kitchens and laundries All metal, glass and plastic waste is sent to Maun to be recycled
All trashcans are caged to prevent scavengers relying upon them as a food resource
All vegetable and paper waste is incinerated immediately to avoid attracting scavengers
The generators are heavily insulated to reduce noise pollution to levels that do not impact negatively on the guests and wildlife
All toilet waste paper used on activity refreshment stops is returned to the capm for incineration - nothing is buried in the bush
Sustainable utilization of resources (fish, thatching grass, firewood) is carefully monitored and ensured
