Egypt - Featured Trips

Egypt - Cairo and Black & White Desert (8 Days)
This trip offers a fantastic combination of the hustle & bustle of Cairo and total tranquillity of the desert. You will be guided around Pharonic, Coptic and Islamic Cairo and see all the 'must see' places. The second part of the tour takes you into the Black and White Desert with the most incredible variety of colours, shapes and even some Pharonic tombs. Experience the desert in its true form sitting around a camp fire with your Bedouin guides. A visit to the Bahariya Oasis is also on the programme.

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo
Arrival at Cairo Airport with a transfer to your hotel in the Pyramid area of Cairo. Overnight at 4* Hotel in Giza on B&B basis.

Day 2: Pyramids at Giza
You will be introduced you to your local guide and your excursion can start. A visit to the Egyptian Museum is an absolute must on a tour to Cairo. Your guide will take you through the history of Pharaonic Egypt with the help of the artifacts exhibited, from Narmer to Akhnaton and Ramses. Of course, the galleries with the treasures of Tutankhamon will be carefully explained.

After lunch you continue to the most famous sight in Egypt of course, the Pyramids at the Giza Plateau, dating back to 2500 B.C. One of the seven classic Wonders of the World, they are the oldest and the only remaining. The visit will take us to the highest point of the plateau to have a panoramic view of the area, to one of the three pyramids (Cheops, Kephren or Mycerinos), where those who wish may enter, as well as the valley temple of Kephren and the mysterious Sphinx. Overnight at 4* Hotel in Giza on B&B basis.

Day 3: Cairo City Tour
Christianity came to Egypt with Mark in the first century AD, and the largest Christian communities in Egypt, the Copts, call their church one of the oldest in the world. You will discover the holy family's flight to Egypt, about the first monks and monasteries and about how Pharaonic art and symbols made their way into the new religion. Then we visit the churches which provided shelter to the Holy Family after escaping Herodes.

Visit one of the most magnificent mosques of Cairo, El Rifai, also the burial site of among others King Farouq and the last Shah of Iran. End the Cairo tour in the oriental bazaar district, Khan El Khalili. Observe daily life and the oriental character of this place with its typical shops and cafes. Overnight at 4* Hotel in Giza on B&B basis.

Day 4: Desert Safari
An early morning jeep transfer out of Cairo into the desert and onto Bahariya Oasis. The road is asphalted so the transfer to the oasis will not take more than 3.5 hours. The closer you get the redder the sand because of the iron in the ground. You will pass through the little mining town of Menagim before starting a descent to the oasis. The oasis, which actually consists of several smaller oases, has more than 30,000 inhabitants.

After lunch climb to the top of the Black Mountain to have a view of the oasis and the surrounding desert, or swim in the hot spring. In the afternoon you will continue on your desert safari, transported through sand dunes and black mountain tops with plenty of stops for the beautiful views, and sand dune climbs.

Late afternoon, just before sun set, you arrive in the White desert with its incredible lime stone and chalk formations. Our camp is put up deep into the whitest part. We enjoy the sunset and a barbeque by the camp fire. Our Bedouin drivers like to sing and often entertain us. Overnight Bedouin Camping on FB basis.

Day 5: White Desert
You will wake up to see the beautiful sun rise and after breakfast return to the oasis. Visit the Black Flower Valley filled with corals and other fossils that have been wonderfully well kept for millions of years, from a time when most of Egypt was under the sea. You will also visit the Crystal Cliff and Agabat. There is a possibility for a camel ride in the Agabat area. Overnight Bedouin Camping on FB basis.

Day 6: Black Desert and Bahariya Oasis
Jeep drive through the desert, Black Mountain, Hot water springs, Bahareya. Until 30 years ago Bahariya was very isolated, the fastest way to go to Cairo or the Nile Valley was with camel through the mountains to central Egypt, a journey that took several days. Today you can find all necessities needed for a modern Egyptian society, but it still feels like you are in another world back in time. Another night in Bahariya to enjoy the tranquility and company of the local inhabitants of the oasis. Overnight at the International Hot Spring Hotel or Palm Valley Hotel on FB basis.

Day 7: Return to Cairo
Morning visit of the Museum of Golden Mummies and Temple of Alexander, found as late as 1996. After lunch a gentle drive back to Cairo. Overnight at 4* Hotel in Giza on B&B basis.
