Jordan - Health AND Travel Advice

Health Advice

Recommended Immunisations

  • Hepatitis A
  • Polio
  • Tetanus
  • Typhoid Fever

Yellow Fever Yellow Fever Certificate is required for entry into Jordan if travelling from a Yellow Fever infected area. This includes passengers transiting through an infected area.

Malaria There is no risk of malaria in Jordan.

Passport & Visa

Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months at the time of travel and have preferably at least 2 blank pages.

Visas are required for most EU member states and can be obtained on arrival at Amman International Airport, for US$15 or local equivalent (at the time this information went to press) and is extremely straightforward. You can buy your visa stamps from the exchange offices in the arrivals hall.

General Tips

Tap water in Jordan is not recommended for the use of drinking water. Always use bottled mineral water, which is widely available and very cheap

The local currency is the Jordan Dinar. The exchange rate is approximately US$1 = JOD0.70, £1 = JOD1 and €1 = JOD0.90. It is recommended to carry cash, in preferably US dollars or pound sterling or Traveller's Cheques, if you are worried about carrying cash, which can both be changed easily into Dinar in Amman.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Jordan's hotels. There are many ATMs available for cash withdrawals, accepting Visa & Master card and some debit cards with an upper daily limit of JOD500. In other places, you may be able to withdraw cash on your Visa/Master card in exchange bureaus and some of the bigger hotels, but be aware that they may charge very high commission rates.

Internet and email facilities are now widely available in most towns and cities in Jordan. The charges vary, but are generally very reasonable. Jordan uses 220V electricity and generally the European two-round-pin socket types.

The Jordanian time zone is GMT+2, meaning that most of the year, Egypt is 2 hours ahead of the UK and 1 hour ahead of most other Western European countries.
