Kenya - Places To Stay

Peponi Hotel
Lamu - The Peponi Hotel is a small owner managed hotel on the magical Island of Lamu, off the north coast of Kenya. Lamu has been a port of call for centuries, and the Korschen family opened the hotel in 1967, which today retains much of its old world charm. In December 2001 Lamu Town became a world heritage site in order to protect the oldest inhabited Swahili settlement south of the Sahara. The rooms at Peponi all overlook the ocean, and traditional swahili style fresh seafood are served under the stars. The gardens on the hotel grounds boast one of the largest and most varied collections of tropical palms and exotic plants on the Kenyan coast. A fresh water free form simming pool and hammocks in the shad of giant coconut trees offer an oasis for rest and relaxation.

Responsible Travel
Lamu Marine Conservation Trust was started by Peponi Hotel in 1992. The project began with the translocation of a turtle nest to the hotel grounds for protection. Since then the project has been growing every year and has now become an established trust. It has been managed by Carol Korschen of Peponi Hotel from the start.

The trust aims to:
*Reduce the illegal trade of sea turtle product on the black market
*Increase the survival chance of the hatchlings and enhance beach security in Lamu in the form of regular patrolling
*Treat sick turtles with barnacles, tumours and other complications
*Spread awareness of the sea turtles as an essential part of the ecosystem and biodiversity
*Promote eco-tourism through the trips to see the hatchlings
*Spread awareness amongst the local community through talks in schools and video presentations about the importance of turtle conservation
