Malawi - Places To Stay
Liwonde National Park - Mvuu Wilderness Lodge is situated in the Liwonde National Park. Mvuu means hippo in Tonga and the name epitomises the large numbers of pods that float in the river. In this lush and fertile area an excellent diversity of animals, including elephant, sable antelope and waterbuck, and birdlife, specials include Palmnut vulture, Bohm's bee-eater, Osprey, Brown-breasted barbet and Pel's fishing owl, can be seen.
Mvuu Wilderness Lodge is small and intimate lodge set in a stunning secluded location on the banks of the Shire River. The luxury & spacious tents all have en-suite bathroom facilities with bath and outdoor shower and their own private viewing platforms overhanging the lagoon. Away from the tents is a raised dining area with a wildlife library. The best way to explore the area is by boat safari, to view some of the highest densities of hippo in Africa.

Mvuu is easily accessible from Lilongwe (4 hrs by road) or Blantyre (3 hrs by road), and a relative short distance (approx 100 km) from the Southern shore of Lake Malawi. The lodge can be reached by boat along the Shire River, or by road with a river crossing.

Kafulafula School (about 6 km west from the park) has only 6 teachers and over 600 children - many of whose parents work at Mvuu Lodge & Camp. The resources of the school have been boosted through a combination of financial assistance from Mvuu's guests and Wilderness - a new classroom block has been built and books and uniforms are supplied to the children on a regular basis.
Thanks to committed donors and to Wilderness Safaris staff, Nanthomba School in the Machinga district of Malawi just outside the western gate of Liwonde National Park has become a reality. Its construction is the brainchild of three Mvuu Camp and Lodge employees who were inspired by Wilderness Safaris' Children in the Wilderness programme. Financial support of the project came primarily from the H.E.L.P. MALAWI Foundation and the school building was completed in 2007.
All lighting is solar powered and water is solar & gas heated.
Possible (with special permission) to visit the Rhino Sanctuary in the Liwonde Park, which also has reintroduced black rhino, Lichtenstein's hartebeest and buffalo.
Battery recharge facilies are available at reception.
