Mozambique - Featured Trips

Explore Moja Wilderness (4 Days)
Moja Safari Wilderness is an exclusive privately-managed concession within the vast Niassa National Reserve, Mozambique's largest protected conservation area. Situated in Northern Mozambique's remote Lugenda Valley, close to the border with Tanzania and within easy air access of the luxurious island retreats of the Quirimbas archipelago, Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve, Lake Malawi and Dar es Salaam.

The Moja Explore Experience is an incredible walking and canoeing journey through one of the last remaining true wild places in Africa. These up-market tented safaris start at the Mbamba village, a remote and ancient community on the banks of the Lugenda River, and conclude at the mystical Moja SkyBeds, some 30kms downstream. The unique appeal of these safaris is the experience of real wilderness, uncultivated by mass commercialization. Incorporating intuitive encounters with Niassa's unique wildlife, scenic wild places and the communities living within the reserve.

The itineraries are flexible and subject to change depending on guest's interests. The following basic guideline gives you a sample of the type of experience you can expect on a three-night adventure.

Day 1: Arrival in Moja Wilderness
The remote Niassa National Reserve is reached by charter flight from Pemba. You will be met by your guide on arrival and transferred to your comfortable tented camp near Mbamba Village. Enjoy lunch at the camp followed by time to relax and unwind. Visit the nearby Mbama Village this afternoon, or enjoy a short introductory river safari session on the Lugenda River. Sundowners are served on a deserted sandbank before you return to camp for a hot bush style bucket shower. Tonight a musical group from the village will entertain guests while dinner is served under the stars. Overnight in a comfortable safari tent with en-suite bathroom.

Day 2: Lugenda River Safari
After breakfast served on the banks of the Lugenda River you will embark on a canoe safari. While you enjoy spotting hippo, buffalo and waterbuck from the comfort of your canoe, the camp crew will break down, move and set up the mobile camp in a new location. After a lunch and rest stop you will continue your river safari to tonights overnight location overlooking the river. Tonight there will be an opportunity to explore the area on a night drive. Return to camp for your overnight in comfortable safari tent with en-suite bathroom. Overnight at Moja Mobile Camp on FB basis.

Day 3: River and Walking Safari
After breakfast and an early morning swim, you will continue your river safari through the braided channels of the middle Luganda, offering a few exciting rapids and some great birding opportunities. A mid morning walk on the mainland will work up an appetite for lunch, served on the river bank. After an afternoon siesta you will continue your river safari to your camp. Enjoy another fantastic meal and watch the endless night sky from the comfort of your specially prepared SkyBed. Overnight at Moja Mobile Camp on FB basis.

Day 4: Departure
This morning you will be left to lie-in and enjoy the bush as it awakes around you. Breakfast is served in bed and you have the rest of the morning free to enjoy the sollitude of Niassa. A mid-morning transfer will take you to the nearby airstrip for your departing flight.

Seasons and Best Time to Visit
Moja is seasonally restricted due to heavy rains over the late local summer. This safari is available from June to the 15th November. The months of July to September are the coolest and driest months, whilst October has some of the better game-viewing around the river. Best birding is early or late in the season, whilst best canoeing is generally in the first few months of the season, and in December.
