Namibia - Places To Stay

Namibia is a country of remarkable landscapes and hugely contrasting environments. Traditional safari in the green northern half of the country can be combined with desert trekking and boat tours along the skeleton coast. It is undoubtedly the desert landscape that draws most visitors however. Namibia is the most arid country south of the Sahara and is the location of the world's oldest desert with its flowing sand dunes and rocky landscapes. Despite being four times the size of Britain the country had just fewer than 2 million inhabitants making it the ideal refuge for those seeking peace and solitude.

Namib Desert AND Sossusvlei
The entire length of Namibia's coastline is occupied by the sandy dunes of the Namib Desert. As well as the dramatic beauty of the landscape the desert also hosts a surprisingly complex ecology. The best place to combine the splendour of the desert with wildlife is the Namib Naukluft national park - the fourth largest national park in the world. Visit the world famous Sossuvlei pan one of Africa's most photographed natural features amongst the solitude of the bright red sand dunes.

The desert landscape is best viewed from the air and we recommend travelling between Swakupmund and lodges in the Namib Naukluft national park by the Dunehopper scenic flights. The flight from Swakupmund to the Sossuvlei region is just over an hour and the plane hugs the shifting dunes below to give you a dramatic and unique experience.

The unique and stylish desert accommodation offer great opportunities to enjoy the solitude and natural beauty of Namibia's desert landscapes. Below you will find a selection of our preferred small lodges and camps carefully selected with our responsible travel philosophy in mind.

Namib Desert AND Sossusvlei
Sesriem - Desert Homestead is a homely lodge located close to the highlight of your tour - the dramatic desert landscape of Sossusvlei. This is the ideal location to visit the deep red sands of the Namib and scale the dunes above the infamous Dead Vlei. Your guide will take you across the petrified landscape of Dead Vlei and find a shaded location to prepare a bush brunch for you amongst the peace of the desert. The wide grassy valley is sheltered by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains with a view reaching the distant dunes of the Namib Desert in the west. In this exquisite position, they offer simple but stylish accommodation in thatched chalets, which were designed with the fragile beauty of this remarkable environment in mind.

The Kalahari Desert is the southernmost desert in Africa. The word Kalahari means wilderness and is one of Africa's last frontiers. The desert is characterised by massive red sand dunes that come to live after the first rains to support a variety of fauna and flora. Four chalets, constructed of wood and on stilts are situated on top of a Kalahari sand dune, with unsurpassed views to the Southwest.
