Namibia - Places To Stay

Okahirongo Elephant Lodge
Purros Conservancy, Kaokoland - Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is situated in the Kaokoland, often described as one of the last truly wild areas in the North West of Namibia. Charactertized by beautiful mountain landscapes and rugged tranquility, this is the only place in the world where elephant, black rhino and lion live in a desert environment. The lodge is located in the Purros Conservancy, a malaria free area and home to the Himba and Herero tribes of Namibia. The lodge has a Himba style main reception, 2 lounges, 2 dining rooms and a library and can accommodate 18 guests in uniquely decorated cottages. Each cottage has an en-suite bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower and bath.

The menu changes daily, offering a delicious fusion of Italian and African cuisine. Dinner is served in either the dining room, the fire-lit traditional Namibian "boma" under the stars or around the swimming pool. Most of the fresh produce served comes from the lodge's organic garden.

Responsible Travel
Desert Lion Project: The Purros Conservancy supports a stable pride of lions that utilise the Hoaruseb River, and occasionally move to the coast. The Purros Conservancy established a joint tourism venture with Okahirongo Elephant Lodge to develop an eco-tourism programme that will raise funds for the desert lion conservation programme currently underway in Purros. To ensure the long-term conservation of Desert lions, the programme monitors the population ecology of the lion and manage human-lion conflict. With the growing wildlife populations the conflict between lions and the local people has intensified as lions are killing livestock more regularity. In protection of their livestock, farmers often shoot, trap, or poison lions. These local communities bear the costs of living with lions, and in order to ensure the survival of lions in the area, these communities need to share equally in the benefits from eco-tourism.
