Responsible Travel
Ongava Game Reserve was formed in 1991, when shareholders of Ongava converted four unproductive cattle ranches into a highly productive 30 000-hectare private game reserve that is now a haven to large concentrations of wildlife. The Reserve forms a buffer between Etosha National Park and the farms to the south, thus enabling game such as lion, cheetah, hyaena and small antelope greater movement between the Park and the private reserve. Over the years most general game has been reintroduced onto the property. The most successful reintroduction project on the Reserve is the white and black rhino project, where Ongava holds one of the largest rhino custodianships for the Namibian government. These custodianships are set up in safe havens throughout the country in hopes of breeding rhino to more sustainable numbers and reintroducing them into areas where they previously flourished. Ongava Game Reserve is one of the few places in southern Africa where you will have a realistic chance of encountering these amazing creatures.

Ongava Research Centre was officially opened in June 2006. Research is focussed on studies and technology that lead to an increased understanding of the ecosystems that make up Ongava Game Reserve, together with comparative analyses with the flora and fauna in other Namibian conservancies and reserves. They have established a set of core projects, focussed on rhinos, lions and the general issues of carrying capacity.
