South Africa - Featured Trips

Fair Trade Wildlife, Myths & Legends (8 Days)
Limpopo is a land of beautiful and contrasting landscapes with a rich natural and cultural heritage and abundance of wildlife. Combine this with exploring the more recent & vibrant history of Soweto by bike and you will have the most fascinating, Fair Trade South Africa experience.

Visit one of the Greater Kruger private game reserves, home to the Big Five, offering exceptional game viewing without the distraction of large tourist buses on the busy tarred routes within the Park itself. Venture deeper into Limpopo to the Soutpansberg region, a magical place steeped in Venda mythology and legend, and discover the area's community art & craft routes.

This itinerary is ideal for the discerning, adventurous traveller, who enjoys exploring distant lands and indigenous cultures. The route is simple to navigate and roads are fairly good and well signposted, but you will need to be willing to explore some of the sites independently, which requires a sense of adventure. Accommodation in the Kruger is rustic, but comfortable, exclusive and intimate. This safari is suitable for both couples and families with older children (preferably 12 years and older).

Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg
On arrival at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg you will be met by a representative of The Peech and transferred to this boutique hotel in the city. Overnight at The Peech Boutique Hotel - Garden room on BB basis.

Day 2: Soweto
You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Soweto, where you will embark on a 2 hrs cycling tour of some of the most interesting historical sites around Soweto. Soweto, one of the most well-known Townships in South Africa, emerged just after 1900 as a racially segregated area re-locating an emerging black labour force for white companies, especially for the gold-mining industry. Soweto became home to political philosophers and produced some of South Africa's greatest leaders, such as Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, and Robert Sobukwe. Today, Soweto is the beacon for the new South Africa, a symbol of resistance to overcome repression and exploitation.

On your bike tour, you will visit the formal migrant workers' hostel and be introduced to the conditions male mine workers lived in, but also meet the families that live here today. Cycle through the vibrant community of Meadowlands, and continue to the Hector Pieterson Memorial, historical landmark of the 1976 student uprising. On your return to Lebo's, enjoy a drink or two (own account). Remainder of the day to enjoy at your leisure.

Overnight at The Peech Boutique Hotel - Garden room on BB basis.

Day 3: Greater Kruger Safari
This morning you will be transferred to OR Tambo airport for your flight to Hoedspruit. On arrival, collect your rental car Group B (Group B Ford Figo or similar, 1.4 l manual, petrol car) and make your way to the nearby Umlani Bushcamp. This classic African safari camp is located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park. Depending on your arrival time, you might be in time for a late afternoon game drive.

Overnight at Umlani Bush Camp on FB basis plus daily two guided game drives and optional bush walks.

Day 4-5: Timbavati Safari, Kruger
Spend 2 full days on organised game drives and walks in the Timbavati, soaking up the tranquillity of this perfect setting. All game activities are included in your itinerary price. Umlani is also able to arrange special children's safari activities on request.

Umlani is renowned for their outstanding Shangaan rangers and trackers. You will be taken out on two game drives per day in open top Land Rovers. The morning game drive will leave at dawn and the night drive will leave in the late afternoon. There is always a ranger on stand-by for optional morning bush walks or to spend some time in their hide.

Overnight at Umlani Bush Camp on FB basis plus daily two guided game drives and optional bush walks.

Day 6: Lakes Region, Limpopo
Depart after the early morning activity & breakfast and head for the Sacred Lakes region of Limpopo. Shiluvari is set in 60 ha of natural vegetation and offers you the opportunity to walk through the estate, where you may see some of the game species that frequent the area. Waterbuck, kudu, bushbuck and duiker are often seen grazing and browsing in the lodge grounds.

Overnight at Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge - Chalet on BB basis.

Day 7: Arts and Crafts, Limpopo
Shiluvari is situated in the heart of rich diverse Venda and Shangaan culture famous for their multi-talented arts and crafts. You have the opportunity to book a hop-on local guide to join you on a half day excursion exploring the arts & crafts of the region (tour cost goes to local guide and is therefore payable locally in cash direct to guide).

Shiluvari is one of the founding members of the Ribolla Tourism Association, with the aim to showcase the many talented artists and crafters of the region. The Ribolla Art Route takes you to textile weavers, potters, wood carvers, and beaders. Overnight at Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge - Chalet on BB basis.
