South Africa - Featured Trips
This trip takes you from the Kalahari right down to Cape Town, covering some of the most amazing scenery in Southern Africa. This part of South Africa is still relatively unknown to international tourists yet offers some stunning arid landscapes and less well known wildlife such as the Oryx and Jackal. The cultural heritage of the Eastern Cape is also rich as these open landscapes are the traditional hunting grounds of the San people. This tour contrasts both the modern international city life of Cape Town with the traditional lifestyles of the San whose culture is thousands of years old.

National Parks such as Kgalagadi Transfrontier and Augrabies Falls NP work hard on improving relationships with local communities through their Park forums. Rural communities are encouraged to actively participate in the management of their local park and raise issues affecting their lives and the environment through the Park Forums. SANParks are also involved in projects to train, promote self-empowerment and create job opportunities for unskilled rural people.
Klipkolk Lodge is the only community owned lodge in the area and your hosts Gertruida and Hendrik Bott are very involved in the development of tourism products to spread the benefits from tourism amongst the local community living in one of the most remote areas of the country.
The Khomani San is the last remaining San tribe in South Africa and are living in the immediate surroundings of the Molopo Kalahari Lodge, where also their arts & craft centre is located. Tourism provides the San with alternative incomes from amongst others selling arts & crafts, keeping their traditional life styles alive, demonstrating rock & ostrich eggshell painting, burn work on bone and through guided walks showing desert tracking & survival skills.
