South Africa - Places To Stay
Kruger National Park - Plains Camp, operated by and offered in conjunction with Rhino Walking Safaris, is situated in a private concession within the Kruger National Park. The concession shares an unfenced boundry with Mala Mala and Sabi Sands reserves, allowing game to move freely between the reserves. Plains Camp's luxury African explorer style tents overlook the Timbeten plain and waterhole. The 19th Century style camp is raised on wooden decks and stylishly decorated. A typical day at Plains Camp begins with morning coffee and rusks followed by a morning walk tracking rhino and elephant. Returning to camp, enjoy a leisurely brunch and relax in the cool of the acacia trees overlooking the waterhole. Following high tea, set out again in the late afternoon for a walking safari or game drive and then indulge in a sunset cocktail.

Main focus is on guided walking safaris, game drives are also available, but best to combine with Rhino Post Safari Lodge, which is specifically focussed on game drives.
In keeping with the ethics of Rhino Walking Safaris "tread lightly on the land", no trees were cut down in the construction of this camp. No concrete was used - all structures are canvas and wood. This camp was specifically designed for low energy consumption and makes use of generators for its power needs.
Rhino Walking Safaris are involved in the following projects:
Sable Research in the Kruger National Park
In conjunction with the research department of the Kruger National Park (SANPARKS), all funds collected for this project will be used by the SANP's Northern Plains & Plant-herbivore interactions department for the study of the rare sable antelope, which also occurs on the Rhino Walking Safaris concession.
Tshemba Hosi School, bordering Kruger National Park
Tshemba Hosi School was founded by Mrs Tryphina Makhubela. In 2001 she was told that she would have to take her youngest son, then aged seven, out of his regular school, as he was mentally handicapped. She started to teach him at home. Thsemba Hosi School now provides day care, education and two meals a day to fifty-four children.
Cash in South African Rand is accepted. All major credit cards are also accepted.
Sleep Outs
Guests wanting to enjoy a unique experience will be able to do "Sleep Outs" on elevated wooden platforms (weather permitting). This is the only place in the Kruger National Park offering this unusual accommodation. Guests will leave Plains Camp in the late afternoon, and accompanied by a guide walk to the sleep out platforms carrying a lightweight rucksack containing a change of clothes and refreshments. Beds are prepared on the platforms covered by mosquito nets, and dinner is served under the stars. The following morning, guests will enjoy a light snack after which they will return to the main camp for a hearty brunch.
Spend 3 nights and get the 4th night free, available for the months of May and June.
Other long stay specials available on request.
