Tanzania - Highlights

In Tanzania, BAOBAB Travel offers a fabulous range of trips combining some of the best safari destinations with tropical beaches, walking in the Usambaras and Kilimanjaro Treks.

The National Parks in Tanzania all offer unrivalled safari experiences in terms of abundance and diversity of wildlife, and variety of landscapes. The Northern National Parks include the Serengeti, famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, all offering a range of lodge and mobile safari options. A Hot Air Balloon Safari over the endless plains of the Serengeti is one of the best ways to view the migration.
Selous, Ruaha and Katavi in the south of Tanzania are some of the most untouched and wildest reserves in Africa. Game drives, boat cruises and guided walking safaris will give you the opportunity to view a variety of wildlife and bird species.

The little known Usambara Mountain range is one of Tanzania's gems offering incredible natural bio-diversity, fascinating culture and some great walks culminating in breathtaking viewpoints. However, the most famous of all is Kilimanjaro, the highest snow-capped peak in Africa towering almost 6,000m above the surrounding plains. A trek up Kilimanjaro is an exhilarating, beautiful and challenging experience.

The Swahili Coast offers palm fringed white beaches, pristine coral reefs and a colourful history believed to go back some 2,000 years. It always had powerful trading links with Arabia and Persia, providing a gateway for slaves, gold, ivory, wood, spices, glass, and textiles. Some of the world's best dive sites can be found around the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Island.

Mount Kilimanjaro is famous as the highest peak in Africa, and perhaps what makes its snow-capped summit all the more impressive is that it stands alone towering almost 5,000m above the surrounding plains. A trek up Kili is an exhilarating, beautiful and challenging experience and your reward, of watching the sunrise from the top of Africa's highest mountain, is breathtaking.

BAOBAB offers you the chance to climb to the peak of Kili following the lesser-used Machame route. This route takes 6-7 days and offers a gradual ascent, a wide range of scenic areas and gives plenty of time to acclimatise.

This Kilimanjaro trek is available on a tailor-made basis for private treks, couples or small groups. Other routes such as the Rongai are also available.

The Serengeti is most famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration, which is what this itinerary is all about. The safari lodges used are seasonal camps that move with the migration, so you are ensured of prime positions to witness this awesome annual phenomenon with opportunities for bush walks. Best time for this itinerary is June - November.

Start with a few days relaxing on an idyllic Robinson Crusoe Island boasting 9 km of deserted beach, followed by safari in the Selous, the largest Game Reserve in Tanzania. The number of tourists is capped to limit the environmental impact in Selous together with its immense size, gives you a real sense of isolation, exploration and discovery. Unlike Tanzania's northern National Parks, walking safaris with an armed ranger are permitted in Selous. You will finish on the south west coast of Zanzibar, a beautiful white sandy beach lined with coconut palms and spectacular views across a coral reef to the azure Indian Ocean beyond.

Would you like to experience real off the beaten track Tanzanian safaris? This itinerary explores the less frequented wildlife areas, including the newly gazetted Saadani National Park on the Indian Ocean Coast. It also includes Mikumi and Ruaha and several road transfers to experience the real Tanzania. Tanzania has some of the most untouched National Parks in Africa. The number of tourists visiting the reserves in the south of Tanzania is limited and this, together with their remote location, makes them ideal for travellers seeking a sense of isolation, exploration, and discovery.

Our Tanzania Special is an exquisite trip that runs on a tailor-made basis and combines famous safari destinations, such as the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, nature walks in the Usambara Mountains and relaxation and culture on Zanzibar Island. This 15-day, action packed, comprehensive and exciting itinerary is run at a leisurely pace - can you think of a better way to spend a fortnight in East Africa?

Lodges in Southern Safari Destinations

Katavi National Park - Katavi Wildlife Camp is one of the only two camps in Katavi. Katavi is universally recognized as one of the few truly remote and untouched areas of Tanzania's immense conservation areas, offering exclusive and unforgettable safari experiences. The habitat is predominantly high plains grassland, which becomes swampy wetland during the rains, interspersed with fringes of miombo woodland and scattered acacia.

The tents are built onto wooden platforms, shaded by an extended thatch roof and are luxurious in size and furnishings. They are cunningly set back in amongst the trees that line the Kitasunga Plain, providing both shade and camouflage in this prime game viewing area, where the wildlife are unaware of your presence. From your tent you can watch the daily movements of game between food and water and witness the dramas unfold. All tents have solar heated water. Dining is in the mess tent or under the stars.
Lodges in Mafia Island AND Swahili Coast
Mafia Island AND Swahili Coast
Chole Island, Mafia Archipelago - Chole Mjini offers accommodation in unique treehouses, set in attractive tropical gardens with ancient Persian ruins overlooking Chole's beach. Each treehouse is designed individually and built using local materials and craftsmanship. Some are built around baobab trees, others set in the mangroves or on the beach. Each treehouse has a private garden with dry-composting toilet and hot water shower at ground level. Meals are served in a charming open-sided building, also housing a lounge area and upstairs bar with sweeping views across Chole Bay. The accent is on traditional local dishes of fresh seafood, fruit & vegetables, but also more international recipes adapted to local ingredients and zesty spices.
Mafia Island AND Swahili Coast
Mikindani, Swahili Coast - The Old Boma is a 100 year old fort and a national monument, beautifully restored into a comfortable hotel whilst retaining its original features and charm. The Boma is set on a hillside overlooking the Indian Ocean, providing breathtaking views from dawn to dusk. The spacious en-suite rooms are furnished with hand-carved beds, Tinga-tinga paintings and other local handicrafts.

The restaurant serves organic vegetables from its market garden and fresh seafood bought direct from local fishermen. There is a large swimming pool surrounded by Frangipani & Flame trees, and a poolside bar with the Old Courthouse providing shaded seating.
