Tanzania - Places To Stay
Zanzibar Southwest Coast - Fumba Beach Lodge is located on one of Zanzibar's most secluded beaches, overlooking the Menai Bay Conservation Area. Concealed and miles away from the well visited tourist areas in Zanzibar, Fumba's interesting architecture inspired by ancient cultures, blends effortlessly with the surrounding environment. The rooms are comfortable and spacious with private verandas. Fumba's open-air restuarant specializes in seafood with a local flavour. Constructed from an old dhow, the famous FumBar is situated under a giant baobab tree on a seaside cliff - the perfect place to sip on a cocktail while watching the sun set.

Menai Bay has been dedicated as a conservation area since 1998 due to its outstanding natural beauty. Established by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Menai Bay Conservation Area was designed to give Zanzibaris in the Fumba area a vested interest in their environment so they will protect it. The project is aimed at teaching villagers how to conserve their natural heritage, and how to profitably exploit it in a sustainable manner. Eco-tourism plays an important role in that profitability and Fumba Beach Lodge is the first and only lodge offering accommodation on the pristine Fumba Peninsula.
There was extensive local consultation before the hotel was built, and frequent communication with the village on an ongoing basis. Social events are organised with the local community and visitors are provided with advice on appropriate behaviour and encouraged to interact with the community. Fish, seafood, vegetables and spices are locally sourced and the lodge was built using local materials.
Tourism Concern's Sustainable Tourism Score for Fumba Beach Lodge: 6.3
