Matemwe was established with strong consultation with the local village. Formal structured meetings are held regularly with the elders of the local community. A pathway through the lodge is used by local people and there is complete access to ancestral graveyards which are within the grounds and there is no restriction to the beach. Matemwe provides jobs for local people and buy local produce helping local communities benefit economically from tourism. The lodge is working with the community on a turtle hatching project as well as a schools project. They also support a child through school and provide English teaching at the local school.
The lodge is situated on the driest part of the island where there is real water scarcity. They have provided a pump to pump water from the nearest source which is a few miles away and this also provides water for the village. They rely on government systems for the removal of sewage and rubbish but have recycling, reusing and composting processes in place to reduce the amount of waste they produce. The lodge further minimises its environmental impacts by using solar power for lighting & hot water.
Tourism Concern's Sustainable Tourism Score for Matemwe: 7.3
