General Porters Conditions

Wages - All staff will receive a fair wage and payment will not be left solely to the head guide but will be supervised by the Arusha Office. Porter wages are based on research into the local economic situation and average wages in Tanzania, as well as consultation with local unions. Tips must be distributed openly and fairly, if necessary under the supervision of the Arusha Office. We discuss wage levels with the Arusha Office regularly and provide written guidance on appropriate tipping levels once clients book our treks. The wage will be fair and will include porter's food during the trek. Experienced porters are paid more than junior staff but all staff will receive at least the local minimum wage and no staff will ever be required to live solely off tips. No porter will be paid off during a climb simply because loads have become lighter and therefore fewer porters can manage. All porters will be paid for the duration of the climb.

Accommodation - Each guest’s park fees cover the cost of providing adequate accommodation for the whole team. No porter will have to sleep outside, they will either sleep in huts or tents (depending on route used).

Carrying loads - Porters are not asked to carry more than 15kg each. The packs will also become lighter as the trek commences due to food stores being eaten.

Transport - We provide vehicle transport for the whole team to the start of the trek. No porter is expected to walk from their home to the start of the trek.

Clothing - All staff are provided with the correct clothing - this includes a warm fleece or sweater, gloves and adequate footwear. A store of appropriate clothing is kept at the Arusha office particularly for young porters who may not possess the correct equipment. This will be issued to the staff at the beginning of the climb and will be collected from them at the end. The Arusha office will keep this equipment well maintained. No porter will be allowed to climb unless he has appropriate clothing.

Medical care - Porters will be evacuated from the mountain if they become ill and will nevertheless be paid for the whole climb. In the event of an accident on the mountain all porters have access to the medical equipment carried by the head guide.
