Damaraland AccommodationMoweni Mountain Camp: This unique lodge nestles amongst the round boulders of the southern Damaraland mountains. The location is excellent for visiting the Twyfelfontein roack art and the desert elephants of the Huab River and both can be viewed from excursions at the lodge during your stay. The luxurious tented accommodation is located unobtrusively amongst the rocky boulders so as to minimise visual impact on the environment. Each room is completely private and has en-suite bathroom facilities as well as a safe and spacious verandahs facing out to the mountains where the sun sets each evening. The public areas, including the lounge and dining area have been designed with dome-like thatched structures to create the impression of an African village. The sundowner bar above the main public area offers possibly the best sunset views of any desert lodge in Namibia and is the ideal location to wind down the day. Grootberg: This 2 room lodge not only offers luxurious and private accommodation amongst the arid and rocky landscape of Damaraland but is also a landmark in Namibia’s tourism industry. It is the first lodge in Nambia to be fully owned by the local community through the Khoadi / Hoas Conservency. This conservancy was established in 1998 to manage the local environment and its wildlife. The lodge has a dramatic location on the edge of a plateau where black eagles soar and can be watched from your bed each morning. Guided walks are offered along the plateau and down to the nearby Klip river with its large populations of zebra, kudu, oryx and ostrich. The lodge location also offers rhino tracking and desert elephant excursions. Because of the close community links this is also an excellent location to participate in authentic cultural tours amongst the semi-nomadic Himba people who reside in the area. At the end of the day guests can relax around the pool or on the private wooden verandahs of the en-suite rooms. Food is freshly prepared and your guides will discuss the day with you over drinks in the evening. All of the time you can relax in the knowledge that your stay at the lodge will directly benefit the local community you are staying in. Erongo Wilderness Lodge: The lodge has 10 private chalets set on stilts amongst towering granite rock formations. Each chalet is located in a private niche amongst the rocks with a wooden viewing deck and mini bar. The en-suite bathrooms are set amongst the shade of nearby trees and bushes and use locally prepared shampoo and soaps. The communal dining area sits atop a granite hill offering spectacular panoramic views which can be enjoyed throughout the day with tea and cakes. Game drives into the local hills are a daily activity but the best way to appreciate the arid woodland savannah is to take a guided walk with one of the excellently trained local guides. Packed lunches and drinks are provided by your guide who will amaze you with expert knowledge on the local flora and fauna.
