QuilÁlea Luxury Private Island

QuilÁlea is a luxury private island in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Guests are flown out on a short private jet journey to a coral island housing just nine cottages.

The island has 9 (45 square metres) coral rock villas, with makuti thatched roof and large private teak veranda with deck chairs and panoramic sea views. A king-size bed draped in romantic mossie netting completes the African/Arabian luxury.

Set on a peninsula at the northern end of the island, the restaurant offers beautiful ocean views to both to the west and the east. Revel in the flavours and spices of Mozambican cuisine influenced by Portugal and Goa. An open-air bar faces onto a deep channel on the landward side. Evening meals can be taken at a private table on the beach in the moonlight making this an ideal romantic getaway.

Guludo Tented Lodge

Guludo Tented Lodge is a true eco-lodge, set on undoubtedly the best beach in Quirimbas National Park.

Accommodation is in 9 generous custom built tents opening upwards and outwards providing dazzling Indian Ocean views. Each tent is carefully positioned to work within the existing landscape and to capture the fresh sea breeze. Each tent has an open-air bathroom with hot bucket-shower cleverly created with local marble & bamboo and kitted with ‘green’ toiletries. A dehydration enviro-loo is shared between 2 tents.

Guludo’s PADI dive centre is fitted out with brand new, top-of-the-range equipment and staffed by experienced instructors. A full range of PADI courses is on offer as well as recreational diving, catering for all levels of divers. Guludo also offers a range of day trips around the Archipelago, bush walks and community based activities.

Aurora Lodge

Aurora lodge Travellers who come to Aurora meet local people in their everyday lives. You can relax in a marvellous rural landscape, where you will be hosted in an old Portuguese mansion. The bedrooms are large and comfortable. Hot water runs in the shared bathrooms and solar power is available in all the common rooms (bathrooms and living rooms).

The food is typically Mozambican, but international dishes (French, South American, Indian) are also served with special menus for vegetarians. For breakfast & lunch you can enjoy the astounding view from the veranda. As night falls, the atmosphere of the house slowly becomes warm and cozy with candle lights illuminating the whole house.

Many cultural activities, including special children’s activities, can be organized experiencing different aspects of Mozambican culture & life. For example:

  • Spend a day in the bush with a traditional health practitioner, who will initiate you to herbal medicine.
  • Learn traditional pottery in the local village with women, who make pots without a wheel – they are the wheel!
  • Mozambican cooking lessons with women, who cook on coal in hand made clay pots, and learn traditional recipes.
  • Visit local sculptors of Makonde art.
  • Have your hair braided in African style or have a make-over Mozambique style, i.e. mussiro mask.
  • Visit the local market, meet the tailor of the village and order a tailor-made garment from local fabric.

Nkwichi Lodge

Nkwichi lodge , set on the shores of Lake Niassa, has been carefully designed to provide comfort & privacy. With a maximum of only 14 people staying at Nkwichi, the lodge can offer you the highest levels of service in a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. Each of the 7 chalets is cleverly tucked between the trees along the lakeshore providing unique lake views. The chalets all vary in size and design depending on their setting, but are all made of local wood, stone and grass thatch with large, sturdy 4-poster beds as the central feature. All chalets are en-suite with either shower or bath with hot & cold running water.

The main lodge building has a dining room raised high on a platform providing views across the lake. The fig tree platform built amongst the enormous granite boulders on the lakeshore provides another popular spot for guests to dine or relax.

Nkwichi offers a variety of exciting and interesting activities, including bush walks, bird watching, Likoma Island tour, swimming, snorkelling, sailing, canoeing and of course relaxing.

Ibo Island Lodge

The regions newest lodge is Ibo Island Lodge which opened on 14th December 2006. The lodge is located on the Indian Ocean coastline of Ibo Island – the former Portuguese colonial capital of the region. The island provides a fascinating glimpse of the regions history with a number of colonial buildings remaining along the coast including several churches, mansion houses and the fort where silversmiths still craft traditional jewellery.

The lodge consists of a series of renovated mansion houses built around baobab trees and maintained in a traditional Portuguese style. It is a unique undiscovered location along the coast where history and relaxation mix in a beautiful setting. The sunsets into the ocean from the rooftop bar are spectacular as is the scuba diving and mangrove forest environment in the local area.

With just twelve rooms Ibo Island Lodge is a perfect hideaway where you can unwind or be as active as you wish. All rooms are air conditioned with ceiling fans and fitted with hand crafted furniture made locally on the island. Each room is en-suite and open out onto a private veranda from where you can watch the traditional dhows sail out into the ocean.

Ethical & Environmental Principles

Guludo’s community played a key role in the designation of Quirimbas National Park and the local community still owns the land Guludo lodge is built on. Guludo Lodge donates 5% of its income to the Social & Environmental Regeneration Fund, they also train & employ locals and purchase local building materials & food produce. Guests can actively participate in the ongoing conservation & community projects.

Aurora Lodge assists the local population of Montepuez by offering them employment in organic agriculture on the farm land of the Aurora estate. A cottage industry has been established producing 100% natural products such as fruit juices, dried fruits, jams, vinegars, vegetable oils and essential oils. Tourists are invited to meet the local farmers and visit the village during their stay at the lodge.

Nkwichi Lodge is set up from the outset with responsible methods of tourism development. Staying at the lodge provides wages for up to 50 local members of staff, whose salaries support up to 15 members of their direct families. This means that by staying at the lodge you will have an impact on the lives of 750 people.

Smaple itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival at Pemba airport, where you will be met and transferred to Pemba Beach Hotel only minutes from the airport. Overnight stay at Pemba Beach Hotel (B&B basis).

Day 2 - Early start for a 1.5 hours 4x4 drive to Aurora, a refurbished Portuguese colonial mansion on the outskirts of the town of Montepuez. Here you will receive a warm welcome and the chance to take part in a number of activities with the locals – e.g. pottery, traditional dancing, dress making or just relax amongst the rocky bush and mansions gardens. Overnight stay in Aurora (FB basis).

Day 5 - Early start for a 2½-hours 4x4 drive to Guludo on the northern tip of Quirimbas National Park. At Guludo you will be greeted by Amy and check into your eco-accommodation. Overnight stay in Guludo Luxury Tented Lodge (FB basis).

Days 5 - 9 - Free days at Guludo to indulge in complete relaxation, get involved into one of their community projects, go elephant tracking with an experienced guide, visit the historic Ibo Island or explore the nearby reefs diving or snorkelling. Day 10 – Morning transfer by 4x4 taxi to Pemba airport for your onwards travel arrangements.

Your stay in Mozambique can be fully tailor-made. Five to seven flights per week are available between Dar and Pemba, so you can stay as long as you like.
