Maasai Mara Accommodation

The Maasai Mara reserve offers a large number of lodges and hotel options and we are happy to include a particular location you may wish to stay at in your tour. We believe you will get the best from your stay in the reserve at one of the small tented lodges which offer both luxury and a highly personal safari experience as well as minimising the impact on the local environment.

From a responsible travel standpoint we are very aware that the Maasai Mara is traditionally the homeland of the Maasai people. Responsible Tourism provides an opportunity for the local people to benefit from your presence in the Maasai Mara. The lodges we recommend below employ many Maasai from the local community in a range of jobs including game trackers, room stewards, waiters, cooks and night watchmen.

Offbeat Mara Camp

Offbeat Mara Camp is a 12 bed luxury seasonal camp situated in a central location in the Maasai Mara. It has a riverside location along the Olare Orok River and gives guests a highly personal safari experience.

There are just six safari tents each fitted with wooden beds and en-suite shower rooms with flushing toilets and piping hot traditional safari bucket showers. The tents have internal lighting provided by solar power. The lodge is owner operated and has a personal touch which is reflected in its freshly prepared foods.

Each day on safari begins with a hearty cooked breakfast and is concluded with a sumptuous four course dinner. For latest rates and possible itineraries including this accommodation please

Sala’s Camp

Sala’s Camp is also a seasonal camp but situated in the far south of the Maasai Mara reserve alongside the border with the Serengeti. This is one of the quieter parts of the park and provides excellent game viewing. The camp has its own river crossing with Wildebeest arriving from the Serengeti and crossing the Sand River from June onwards. The more spectacular crossing of the Mara River is just 45 minutes game drive away.

There are eight safari tents each fitted with wooden beds and en-suite shower rooms with flushing toilets and traditional safari bucket showers. The tents have internal lighting and spectacular personal views across the sand River into the plains of the Serengeti.

The lodge is also owner operated and its freshly prepared meals are also a highlight. Again each day on safari begins with a hearty cooked breakfast and is concluded with a sumptuous four course dinner. For latest rates and possible itineraries including this accommodation please contact us.

Kicheche Camp

At Kicheche each tent is comfortably furnished with an en-suite bathroom and flushing toilet, low wattage lighting is supplied 24 hours. The majority of the tents are in secluded positions overlooking the plains and nearby hills, while others are closer together for families or friends.

The spacious Nyati tent acts as the camp lounge with comfortable seating, a library, board games, cards and local crafts.

Each day the cook produces delicious and healthy meals, and the menu features both African and international dishes. Fresh produce is flown in regularly and bread and pastries are baked daily. In-camp meals are taken al-fresco whenever possible when guests may sit at the communal table with their hosts, or are welcome to dine alone.

Fly Camping

For a closer to nature experience you might want to consider a mobile camping safari. There are a number of camping sites around the park borders from where you can enjoy a safari during the day before returning to camp to relive the day’s wildlife encounters.

All tents and bedding are provided and meals are prepared for you whilst you relax by the fire as the evening wildlife becomes active.

There are shared communal showers and toilet facilities at each camp site. We can provide camping safari for individuals, couples or small groups but please note we can not guarantee that there will be a private experience at any particular camp site. For latest rates and possible itineraries including this accommodation please contact us.

Responsible Travel
As well as the economic benefits to the Maasai people which we mention above the seasonal camps we recommend are designed to be completely dismantled when not in use.

At the end of the tourism season each camp is removed from the local environment leaving nothing behind. All power is provided by solar generators which can also be removed and water is drawn from existing groundwater supplies in the river locations.

The small numbers of tourists accommodated minimizes the impact on wildlife populations and the camps themselves will leave no sign they ever existed when dismantled.
