Responsible Travel
Tourism revenue is donated from the lodges we promote here to assist in community development projects. In particular this is very successful at Lake Victoria where guests will see the development projects initiated from tourism revenue during the boat safari on the lake. On Rusinga Island both a youth group and women’s orphan group have been established and internet facilities introduced to the island to connect locals to the world.

The Lake suffers from a huge overpopulation of Water Hyacinth which has been introduced as an ornamental plant in the 1980’s. The floating root systems have choked the lake trapping fishing vessels and providing a breeding site for the bilharzias snail. Millions of dollars of World Bank aid is helping to remove the plant but it is a long and hard task for the locals.

At Rusinga Island you will see how local small businesses have begun to utilize the plant in rope making and basket weaving. Tourism revenue has been crucial in initiating the businesses and supporting them as guests buy the baskets and mats produced by locals.
