Hippo pod in the Lower Zambezi

Accommodation & Activities

The different accommodation described below offer great opportunities to enjoy the wildlife and natural beauty of the Lower Zambezi National Park. All accommodation can be booked in combination or individually, on a fully tailor-made basis – you decide how long you want to stay and where. A visit to the Lower Zambezi National Park can be combined with other destinations in Zambia, such as the South Luangwa National Park and Victoria Falls/Livingstone area, or even the relaxing beach lodges alongside the shores of Lake Malawi in Malawi.

There are two distinct accommodation types within the Park. Lodges are generally luxurious accommodation whilst bushcamps offer a more private and ‘close to nature’ experience. There are rarely more than 6 guests at a bushcamp at any one time and during the day guests will be able to take private safaris without encountering any other vehicles. A combination of lodge and bushcamp accommodation is highly recommended to experience the full scope of the Park.

Lodge accommodation:

Chongwe River Safari Lodge
Chongwe River Safari Lodge is situated at the confluence of the river Chongwe and the Zambezi itself. The location of the lodge on the quiet Chongwe River allows for a variety of different activities including a river walk up to the Chongwe waterfalls and secluded canoe trips. Chongwe has the added benefit of Silky the pet impala.

The lodge features 8 luxury tented chalets with en-suite bathrooms. Each tent is a large walk in canvas safari tent hung from a thatch roof. Bathrooms are open-air surrounded by a stone wall for privacy and are probably the most novel bathrooms I have come across in Zambia. Hot water is available 24-hours. There is a dining/bar area overlooking the Chongwe and Zambezi and a small jungle gym.

The tents feature comfortable beds under mosquito nets, chairs and coffee tables and an en-suite bathroom with open air shower, flush loos and hot and cold running water. Each tent has its own ‘Muchinda’ (butler) who will deliver tea & coffee first thing in the morning.

Bushcamp accommodation:

All bushcamps offer excellent standard accommodation with bar facilities and lodge standard meals prepared by a resident cook. Each Bushcamp has its own unique features depending on its exact location within the park. Hot water is available at certain times of the day and evening lighting is generally provided by hurricane lamps.

The Luangwa Bushcamps operate during the Peak Season only, i.e. 1st June – 15th November.

Old Mondoro Bushcamp
Old Mondoro Bushcamp is an exclusive 8 bed bushcamp located on an extensive river floodplan dotted with acacia trees and mopane woodland. The nearby open plains and rich lagoon systems make this a walkers paradise. Although some game drives are possible the emphasis here is very much on walking activities.

Traditionally designed tents offer stunning views whilst providing comfortable beds under mosquito netting. Each tent is fitted with tables and chairs and has an en-suite bathroom with flushing loo and showers.

Fly Camping:

Overnight Camping
A multi-day walking itinerary tailor-made to a group's requirements can be arranged with a months minimum notice. The Wildlife Authority of Zambia allocate scouts and sites (which can affect availability). These overnight camps are mobile with shared facilities and fully serviced tents. The sites vary from water holes, plains and the mountains.

Ethical & Environmental Principles

Chiawa Camp Projects - A large portion of the Chiawa Camp's revenue and resources is reinvested into protecting the Lower Zambezi by supporting and implementing programmes involving conservation, anti-poaching, wildlife education, and the improvement of the surrounding village communities.
One project in particular is the AIDS orphan sponsorship. Last year some of the camp's revenue was used to sponsor the primary education of 90 children in one local school, who have been orphaned through AIDS. Each year a new school is added to this scheme.
