The Maasai Mara reserve is the highlight of most tours to Kenya. Whilst it can be busy at peak times of the year the grasslands contain a huge density of big game and offers dramatic big sky panoramas as far as the eye can see. The reserve is infamous for receiving over half a million migrating wildebeest from the neighbouring parks across the Tanzanian border. From June onwards the animals start arriving in herds stretching for many kilometres across the landscape. The crossing of the Mara River as the herbivores battle crocodiles and waiting big cats and dogs is one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles.

Things to do
The Maasai Mara offers a range of safari options including:

Game drives: Open topped safari vehicles are the easiest way to move around the park. Experienced guides will drive you to the areas where specific animals are known to be present.

Walking safaris: There is no better way to appreciate the sights, sounds and smell of the bush than on foot. In certain areas of the Maasai Mara it is possible to walk through the bush in the more open areas with an armed ranger and highly experienced safari guide. Your guide will introduce you to the animal signs and tracks, the birds and smaller wildlife that are missed in a vehicle.

Balloon Safari: Experience the peace and majesty of the Mara plains whilst floating above the landscape with a perfect 360 degree view. Flights take off at dawn and last typically for 1.5 hours (depending on wind conditions) before ending with a champagne bush breakfast.

Night drives: After sunset the Mara takes on a completely different characteristic. Nocturnal animals such as hyena, civet and porcupine become active and the large cats begin to hunt. In the trees the smaller animals such as bushbaby and the eagle owls are readily spotted. A night drive is an unforgettable experience, especially for the lucky ones who witness lionesses hunt or a leopard kill. All night drives are lead by an experienced guide and ranger armed with a powerful spotlight to pick out the wildlife.

Mobile Safari: Travel around the Maasai Mara and beyond whilst sleeping under canvas in the bush. Camping safari can be arranged as a specific tour or as a few days adventure during part of a longer lodge based tour.

Cultural Tours: If you wish to take a break from safari why not consider a visit to a traditional Maasai village? There is an opportunity to meet locals and gain an understanding into their way of life. Your visit will be welcomed and provides a chance to buy local crafts directly from the artists themselves.

Getting There

British Airways fly directly to Nairobi every day from London Heathrow. As a fully ATOL bonded tour operator we would be pleased to include the international flight in any itinerary you receive from us. There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi into the Maasai Mara and it is also possible to transfer by road.

Best Time to Visit

The climate in the Maasai Mara area follows the same pattern as the rest of Kenya with a long dry season between June and November when sun intensity can be very strong due to the location close to the equator. Peak daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees centigrade.

There is a short rainy season in late October and November when the weather can be very humid with short but intense rain later in the afternoon. Lodges stay open during this time and the park can be very quiet. In April and May the area receives its peak rainy season when many roads become impassable. This is the only time of the year when tours are not possible and most lodges are actually closed in this period.
