The great African Rift valley runs almost the length of the continent from Mozambique through to the Red Sea. In Kenya the volcanic activity has produced a fascinating landscape with extinct volcanoes such as Mt Longenot and shallow alkaline lakes which attract deep pink flamingos in flocks of many thousand birds. There are many national parks offering dramatic volcanic landscapes as well as abundant wildlife and cultural excursions

Things to do
The Kenyan Rift Valley offers a range of safari options including:

Safari: The Oserian Wildlife corridor connects the regions lakes with the national parks such as Hells Gate and on to the Maasai lands beyond. There is afascinating diversity of wildlife including Rhino which have been successfully re-introduced to the region alongside Leopard and Cheetah, Zebra, Giraffe and many antelope species. Both game drives and walking safari are possible as well as night drive options.

Lake Naivasha: Amongst the many soda lakes with their flamingo populations is the freshwater Lake Naivasha. Boating safari is an option here as well as fishing for Bass and Tilapia. The birdlife around the lake shore is particularly dramatic.

Hells Gate National Park: In the shadows of the enormous crater of Mt Longenot is Hells Gate. The park is home to an abundant game population and the dramatic volcanic scenery provides the perfect backdrop. Walking and cycling is possible here and the two hour gorge walk is a particular highlight.

Elsamere: Above the shores of Lake Naivasha is the former home of Joy and George Adamson of Born Free fame. The house which is now open to visitors is the location where Joy did much of the writing for the famous books. Today it is possible to take aftnoon tea on the lawn amongst the Colobus monkeys as well as viewing the film of the Joy Adamson Story.

Cultural Tours: The area has become famous in recent years for the many flower farms which have located here. Although there are environmental issues surrounding water use the farms have undoubtedly improved the local economy. A visit to a flower farm can be arranged to see how the locals are benefiting and the industry is responding to water conservation issues. (picture = RVCT)

The climate in the Maasai Mara area follows the same pattern as the rest of Kenya with a long dry season between June and November. The region has a high elevation which gives it a cooler climate than elsewhere in the country. For these reasons the area was very attractive to European settlers during colonial times and western tourists will find the region quite comfortable with temperatures around 20-24 degrees centigrade. It can be quite cold at night however and during the day the sun intensity can be very strong due to both the location close to the equator and the elevation.
