Kenya actually has two coastlines which both offer luxurious accommodation and water sport activities as well as the opportunity to relax. The Swahili coastline with its white sand beaches and tropical waters is one of Kenya’s highlights. Diving and snorkelling options abound as well as traditional dhow trips and fresh seafood. However Kenya also offers the less touristed Lake Victoria Coastline. Relaxing lodges and dramatic boating safari’s are a feature of the lakes shoreline as well as various options for cultural tours in the heart of Kenya’s rural communities.

Things to do - Indian Ocean Coast
The Indian Coast offers complete relaxation on beautiful beaches and also a range of activities including:

Driving: The warm tropical seas enriched by nutrients brought by Indian Ocean currents provide ideal conditions for an astonishing variety of marine life off Kenya’s coastline. Diving is usually possible all year round but due to plankton blooms in the water there can be reduced visibility in the water at certain times of the year. The period between October to March is the prime diving season in Kenya.

Nature walks: Nature walks through the Kenyan coastal forests (Guided or not) are phenomenal experiences. Colobus and Sykes monkey live amongst the trees as well as an impressive array of birdlife. The coastline is also littered with the picturesque ruins of Arab and colonial trading posts. Picnic amongst the ruins or on a number of secluded beaches which can be reached only by boat.

Dolphin Spotting: Cruise the Pemba channel in the far south of Kenya where it is not uncommon to see large pods of dolphins at play and showing off. At certain times of the year Whales and whale sharks can also be observed.

Things to do - Lake Victoria Coast
The Kenyan Swahili Coast offers complete relaxation on beautiful beaches and also a range of activities including:

Boating Safari: Take a morning boat safari out to the dramatic bird islands where thousands of water birds, monitor lizards and otters nest. Fish eagles soar overhead and you will be certain to see them sweeping down to take fish from the local Luo fishermen.

Fishing: Fish for the gigantic Nile Perch or Tilapia either from a boat or off the jetty in the evening. Any fish caught will be cooked for the evening meal in traditional Swahili style with coconut & lime or presented to the local villagers.

Cultural Tours: Lake Victoria is populated by the Luo people who are traditionally fine fishermen. Tourists are welcomed at many fishing villages where the days catch can be observed. Other traditional activities include paper and soap making, tailoring and basket weaving. We take great care to ensure that tourists are welcomed to view the traditional activities as well as ensuring that your hosts benefit. )

Getting There

British Airways fly directly to Nairobi every day from London Heathrow. As a fully ATOL bonded tour operator we would be pleased to include the international flight in any itinerary you receive from us. Both Lake Victoria and the Indian Ocean coast are reached by air. It is around 45 mins to the Indian Ocean coast from Nairobi and 1.5 hours to Lake Victoria by internal flight. Land transfers are possible but roads and generally poor and there are large distances involved in traveling from Nairobi. Both locations make an excellent finish to your stay in Kenya after you have been on safari and we would be pleased to arrange your transfer by either scheduled or charter flight.

Best Time to Visit

The climate in the both areas follows the same pattern as the rest of Kenya with a long dry season between June and November. Many coastal lodges are actually open during Kenya’s rainy season in April and May.
