If you like the feeling of grass beneath your feet, the sound of music in your ears and the sight of incredible nature, Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts are waiting for you. Held in the stunning Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town from early December to early April, concertgoers are treated to fabulous music in a natural amphitheatre that is formed by the surrounding mountain. As a World Heritage Site, Kirstenbosch Gardens is hard to beat as far as concert venues go.

The Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts are a popular activity for both tourists and locals, and the season’s lineup typically showcases some of South Africa’s best musical talent. From classical melodies by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra to the hard rock of Prime Circle; from chilled folk by Matthew Mole to the catchy electronic tunes of world renown music DJ duo Goldfish, you are sure to find something that will please your ears. The venue has also attracted international artists such as Bastille, Passenger, Michael Buble, Bryan Adams, Zavier Rudd and Paolo Nutini.

Many concert-goers make a full afternoon and evening out of their visit to Kirstenbosch and take time to enjoy the gardens before finding a comfortable spot in the demarcated concert area. It is the custom to bring along your own picnic basket and picnic blanket and alcohol is permitted. For those who like to “travel light”, picnic hampers can be bought from Moyo Restaurant within the gardens, or from the Kirstenbosch Tea Room. Refreshments are also on sale at all the concerts. No seating is provided so if you don’t fancy sitting on the grass, you are welcome to bring camping chairs, provided they do not obstruct the view of the stage. Most concerts seem to get the crowd dancing so you might find that chairs may not be necessary at all!

Paolo Nutini Stage

The concert area fills up very quickly so get to the gardens early if you want a good view of the stage. The concerts are enjoyed by people of all ages as there is no age limit or restriction and they are generally finished by sunset (around 19h00).

Ticket prices range from R110 to R175 for adults and from R80 to R140 for children aged 6-21. To see prices for specific concerts and the lineup for 2016, click here. You can also book tickets online at www.webstickets.co.za.
