Flooding in the Caprivi (Namibia)
Wednesday, April 8th 2009
Rising water levels and subsequent flooding have been cause for major concern in the Caprivi region of Namibia. The water levels are reaching records that have not been seen since the 1960s. Many roads have been washed away, people been displaced and some lodges are experiencing operational difficulties as a result of the flooding.
The high water levels also have a positive side, as the seasonal flood waters are regenerative for the delicate ecosystems which comprise this pristine and unspoilt wilderness area. The lodges are expecting an excellent fishing season this year, as the floods provide an opportunity for small fish to proliferate on the floodplains. This ample food supply not only attracts Tiger fish but also results in an overall size increase of the average tiger - which is good news for avid anglers.
