Elephants, Ivory and CITES

At yesterday's meeting of all CITES members in Doha, the application by Tanzania and Zambia to CITES to allow sales of ivory stocks and thereby suspend the 21 year old moratorium was turned down for fears that any sales would fuel the illegal sale of ivory.

A resounding victory for elephant conservationists, although Tanzania have announced that they will appeal.
