Environmental Commitment (Home AND Abroad)
At home BAOBAB Travel is committed to:
- Encouraging use of the internet and email to distribute information and communicate with suppliers and customers to minimise wastage associated with 'glossy' brochures and postal communications.
- Having a style of brochure that can be updated easily, is downloadable from our website and available on CDrom & memory sticks, to avoid the wastage of 'glossy' brochures.
- Using recycled paper, where possible, for all promotional, administrative and communication purposes and print double-sided to minimise wastage.
- Having an active recycling policy, where possible all office waste is recycled, not only paper and print cartridges, but also cardboard, drink cans, glass, plastic etc.
- Avoiding wastage of resources such as electricity and water by e.g. turning off electrical equipment when not in use and making optimal use of daylight.
- Supporting environmental organisations such as the Marine Conservation Society, Tree Aid, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the World Wildlife Fund and the Survival International Charitable Trust by creating awareness through the distribution of information to our clients about the work done by these organisations.
Overseas BAOBAB Travel is committed to:
- Supporting and encouraging local conservation efforts at the destination.
- Actively favouring hotels and suppliers who have 'environmentally friendly' power and waste policies (e.g. those that use renewable sources of energy and follow active recycling policies) and water management policies (e.g. simple water recycling schemes that re-use grey water for watering of gardens or using reed beds for water purification). Only using small-scale hotels, which minimise negative environmental impacts.
- Using local guides who understand the environmental issues of the areas visited and can ensure that tours avoid areas of sensitivity. This has the added benefit that guests can benefit from the local knowledge of their guides.
- Providing guests with information and advice about how they can minimise environmental impacts and advice about how they can reduce their consumption of resources (e.g. fresh water). This also includes advice on issues such as purchasing sustainable seafood by distributing the WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative's consumer's seafood pocket guide.
- Avoiding destinations which are suffering from 'over-tourism' (e.g. certain parts of the Red Sea).
- Keeping groups sizes small (max 12 people) to minimise potential negative impacts on sensitive ecosystems.
