Serengeti: Serengeti in Maasai language means ‘endless plain’, which is probably the best description for this flat plateau covering a massive area of 14,763 km2. The Serengeti is probably most famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration which takes place between May and July, but the park is also well-known for large populations of lion, cheetah and giraffe, amongst many other abundant species. If you keep your eyes pealed you may even spot an elusive leopard in the trees. Ngorongoro Crater: The Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular caldera (inward collapsed volcano) with a diameter of 19 km and a depth of 600 m. The landscape, combined with the density and diversity of wildlife in the crater, is unrivalled. It houses a great number of species, including wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, buffalos, elephants, lions, hippos, a large flock of lesser flamingos and last but not least black rhinos. Tarangire: Tarangire National Park covers approx 2,600 km2 and has a landscape characterised by Baobab trees. It derives its name from the Tarangire River, whose permanent waters ensure a high biodiversity year-round with huge herds of zebras, wildebeest, hartebeest, gazelle, buffalo and elephant. During the dry season, particularly August – October, Tarangire has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania. Lake Manyara: This is a beautiful, peaceful park on the western shores of the alkaline Lake Manyara. The park is well-known for its tree-climbing lions, as well as its hippos, elephants and rich bird-life - at certain times of the year the lake is host to thousands of flamingos. Despite being a relatively small park, there is a diversity of vegetation from savannah to acacia woodland, enabling the park to support a variety of wildlife habitats. Arusha National Park: This is one of the smallest parks in Tanzania, but is also one of its most beautiful and topologically varied. The Park’s features include the Ngurdoto Crater, the Momela Lakes – which attract a rich bird-life and Mt Meru. Animal life in the park is abundant, and this is the only park in the North where you can do walking safaris (accompanied by an armed ranger) within the parks boundaries. |

In the Northern Parks, your safari will be in a private 4x4 safari vehicle, with open-top roof to allow optimum game viewing, and accompanied by a local driver/guide and cook. BAOBAB recommends camping safaris - an activity that limits the impact on the local environment. We offer three levels of camping: budget - with small two-man dome tents; standard – with slightly larger tents & canvas beds; or luxury - with large A-frame tents, proper beds & linen and alcohol included in the price. All safaris are full board with plenty of water included. There are also possibilities for lodge-based safaris, balloon safari, walking safaris (in Arusha National Parks or outside of the main parks) or horse-back safaris. Please contact BAOBAB for further details. Your safari can be completely tailored to suit your personal interests, requirements and budget. However, to get an idea of options available, please check the sample itinerary below. If you are interested in joining a small group trip please check out our Tanzania Special or other set departure itineraries below. |

The Tanzanian Cultural Tourism Programme (CTP) – a programme where local people organise and run small tourism projects, the income being used for community projects – is well developed in the Arusha region. It is well worth visiting one or two alongside your safari, to get a real feel for both the cultural and natural history of this fascinating part of Tanzania. Although there are a wide variety of programmes on offer (ask BAOBAB for further details), two of particular interest are the Longido and Sandemu Iraqw programmes. In Longido, you can meet a Maasai family, living in small traditional bomas, drink a cup of real Maasai tea and roam the Longido plains with a Maasai warrior and their cattle looking for pasture and water. In Sandemu Iraqw, you will meet a resident Iraqw family, who will introduce you to their traditions, houses with ethnic furniture, a ‘three-stones’ kitchen, and their tools & weapons. You will also be introduced to their classic baskets, mats, clay pots and food. These are authentic and intimate experiences as they are designed and run BY the local people who benefit directly from your visits |
